The Equine breeding and genetics programme here at Arc de Triomphe is centred on known "crosses" as well as working on very specific 'exploratory' avenues.
The crossing of PRE Andalusian horses with American Quarter Horses to produce Aztecas is not a new science. The Azteca is a relatively modern horse breed, developed in Mexico, combining three different bloodlines including the Iberian horse blood, specifically Andalusian and Lusitano breeds, the American Quarter Horse and Criollo bloodlines. Specific combinations of these three breeds make up the Azteca breed from Azteca A to Azteca F based on the crossbreeding table. The Azteca is now considered the official horse of Mexico.
We are also engaged in crossing Andalusians to Welsh Section D Cobs to produce fine quality general purpose 'sport' horses.
Here at Arc de Triomphe Stud we are also working, within our breeding programme, on a particular strain of colour genetics - The Champagne Gene. We have acquired a breeding stock of American Quarter horses that are all tested and confirmed as carrying the champagne allele.
With this stock we are concentrating our breeding programme in a number of very specific areas. In all of these we are seeking to combine the best individual qualities of the breeds [Andalusians, Quarter Horses & Welsh Section D Cob] to produce fine horses of unusual colour - specifically the main variants of Champagne; Classic Champagne, Gold Champagne and Amber Champagne.
Foals expected in early 2010 include progeny of the following crosses; Classic Champagne Dun Quarter Horse Stallion put to Palomino Welsh Section D Mare. Black Andalusian Stallion [Known to carry a hidden red gene] put to Amber Champagne Quarter Horse Mare. Watch this space!!! We have very high hopes for Spring 2010...
More details about the specific dilutions of the Champagne Gene can be found on here |
